Famous five for Greenfield

Cricket: GREENFIELD can reflect on a memorable season which saw five different age groups claim top honours.

The under-10s won the Tameside and District Junior League, the under-11s won the TDJL Cup, while the Saddleworth and District Junior League title was shared between the under-13s and Glodwick.

Not to be outdone, the under-15s shared the Leicester Shield with Bamford — the final was abandoned due to rain — while Romida Trophy glory went to the under-17s.

As tense finals go, the under-11s’ showdown with Saddleworth was up there with the best.

The game was eight-a-side, with teams starting with 200 runs and losing eight for each wicket.

Greenfield, coached by Chris Barlow won the toss and decided to bowl, and they managed to restrict their hosts to 205 at the end of the 16 overs.

Barlow’s side knew it would be tight and kept a relatively steady run rate throughout their reply.

With one over remaining the honours could have gone either way but Matt Barlow and Sam Mayor saw Greenfield home to a six-run triumph.

Barlow was delighted with the win and said: “It was very tense. Apart from playing a cricket final in October, we knew it would be tough as Saddleworth had six district cricketers in their starting eight.

“We produced the finest bowling and fielding display we have ever managed.

“It is a magnificent achievement considering the boys had stopped training, and were playing at Saddleworth’s ground.”
