Rangers revel in victory

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED . . . Saddleworth Rangers under-18s celebrate winning the John Burke Trophy.
RUGBY:
SADDLEWORTH Rangers claimed a 20-14 victory over Oldham St Anne’s in the Howarth Timber & Building Supplies John Burke under-18s trophy final.
The sides battled it out in a close contest at the windswept Higginshaw Road home of St Anne’s.
Oliver Kerr twice crashed over for Rangers, with Thomas Hilton and Luke Harding adding a try apiece and Rob Kiblin goaling on two occasions to help clinch the win for Darren Connor’s outfit.
Kendal Davies crossed twice for Saints, with Ryan Bradbury also touching down and Kieran Harmer supplying a conversion.
Rangers coach Connor said: “It was always going to be a bit scrappy due to the weather conditions.
“But everyone out on the pitch seemed to enjoy the occasion — it was a typical derby match.”
Connor revealed both sets of players received top marks for their conduct. He added: “The referee praised the spirit and sportsmanship.
