RUGBY:
ST JOSEPH’S have Twickenham in their sights after two tries from Max Flanagan helped clinch Oldham Schools Tag Rugby Championships glory in a 4-2 final win over St Paul’s.
Luke Smith and Lewis Barley also touched down for the victors, made up of Year Five and Six pupils.
Mills Hill, Bare Trees, Christ Church, Hodge Clough, Diggle, Lyndhurst, Mather Street and Richmond also took part.
St Joseph’s played six matches and remained unbeaten throughout the competition to book a place at the Greater Manchester School Games on March 27 at the Etihad Stadium.
Success at the Oldham Championships has also sealed a spot in the regional tournament of the ‘Tag to Twickenham’ competition, the finals of which will be held before a full international fixture at the famous old venue.
St Joseph’s deputy headteacher Steve Hill said: “Some of the play was really fast and there was some excellent rugby on show.
“We displayed a lot of character to put together an unbeaten run and then win the final. Everyone is looking forward to the School Games at Manchester City next month.”
Organiser Steve Tyrrell said: “St Joseph’s advance to the big event in March and it would be wonderful if they replicated their success because an appearance at Twickenham is a massive incentive.”
