BASKETBALL:

WATERHEAD Academy added their name to the Year Seven Oldham Schools’ Basketball Trophy for the first time after a 6-2 win over Saddleworth in the final.

The popular event, hosted by Oasis Academy’s Ball Hall, saw Saddleworth defeat Hulme and Waterhead get the better of Failsworth in the last-four.

Both sides were worthy finalists but Waterhead were always going to be hard to beat, having gone seven games unbeaten in the competition.

The climax to the tournament was an edgy affair, with neither team making the most of their shooting chances early on.

But Waterhead stepped up a gear and demonstrated the form they had shown earlier in the day.

Two quickfire baskets in the dying seconds helped to seal the victory.

FAILSWORTH got the better of a resilient Crompton House side with a 15-10 win in the Year Eight Oldham Schools’ Basketball Cup.

Locked at 10-10 after regulation time, it took a superb three-point shot from Failsworth’s Scott Hamilton in overtime to separate the two teams.

And as Crompton House chased the game in an attempt to restore parity, Hamilton was again on target, slotting home another basket on the counter-attack.

Earlier at Oasis Academy’s Ball Hall, Crompton House had sailed through the group stages before defeating Waterhead in the first semi-final. Failsworth’s last-four win came at the expense of Saddleworth, avenging a group stage loss.
