Hawks record intact

HANDBALL: NORTH East Manchester Hawks maintained their 100 per cent record in the EHA National Under 18s League with a 29-17 win over Warrington Wolves Wolves at Birchwood.
It was a rematch of the previous week’s open-age Development League encounter — won 21-20 by Wolves — and while the Wolves were without two key older players Hawks were strengthened by the return of England under-18s squad players Sam Bedlow and Tyrell Coley.
Coley had a quiet day, but the strong driving of Bedlow saw him top score with eight goals.
The Hawks led 16-10 at the break, but a series of technical errors saw them turn over possession far too often in the second-half and only a superb display from ’keeper Marc Howard stopped Warrington mounting a challenge.
Hawks recovered their composure with Matty Barnes impressive in defence to run out comfortable winners.
Hawks scorers: Bedlow 8, James Higgins 5, Jamal Braithwaite 5, Stefan Whaley 4, Barnes 2, Wes Hunt 2, Pawel Winnicki 1, Coley 1, Patrick Dundon 1.
SEVERAL of the Hawks’ girls team were in London for the final trials for the Great Britain under-20s squad for the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers.
