RUGBY:

WATERHEAD are through to the second round of the under-16s North-West Youth Cup.

Mid-table in Division Two, the Peach Road outfit enjoyed a 26-8 win at home to Leyland Warriors.

Saddleworth Rangers booked their place in the next stage of the competition after being handed an 18-0 victory as opponents South Trafford Raiders were unable to fulfil the fixture.

Waterhead’s under-18s side are going great guns. Unbeaten in five games, they hold a two-point lead over Blackbrook Royals.



SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-14s enjoyed a 26-10 triumph over Rochdale Cobras.

James Adams broke the deadlock for Rangers almost immediately after capitalising on an error, before Sam Ireland crossed down the left to increase the lead.

Rangers skipper Harry Aaronson got in on the act courtesy of a fine 20-yard run, before touching down in the corner to put his side firmly in command at the break.

Aaron Bishop got his first try for Rangers when he forced his way through, prior to a couple of Rochdale tries. Aaronson completed his hat-trick with time running out.

Ali Hassan was named man of the match for Rangers, while the coach’s award went to winger Archie Taylor.
