THE horrendous weather failed to dampen spirits at the Oasis Academy sports ground on Sunday as Oldham Boro’s under-16s took on touring Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds.
Tameside League side Boro played an excellent game against the Diamonds, eventually losing 3-2 after having led 2-0 at half-time.
Boro manager Simon Molloy said: “We had the wind behind us in the first half and that certainly helped us.
“Fair play to our opponents though, they came back strongly in the second half. We almost nicked an equaliser late on, but overall, despite the atrocious weather conditions, it was a really fantastic afternoon.
“The Japanese players and coaches were very hospitable and the game was played in a great spirit.
“There was a very high tempo to it too. All our lads enjoyed it.”
Boro’s goals came from Matty Wilson and a screamer from Callum Wetton.
