BOXING CLEVER . . . Danny Wright shows off his medal for winning both of his bouts on his England debut.
Boxing:
RECENTLY-crowned National Junior ABA champion Danny Wright made a dream England international debut.
The Failsworth-based 16-year-old featured for his country in a Tri-Nations tournament in Swansea against Scotland and hosts Wales, and he won both his fights convincingly.
Wright, who will turn 17 later this month, fought Welsh hopeful Rhys Gaishemer and won by 17 points to five thanks to a superb performance.
He followed that up 24 hours later by beating Polish-born Scot Igor Sliwinski by 27 points to 10, and after his two victories his trainer at the Boarshaw Gym, Ben Lancaster, was told that Wright has potentially now forced himself into the reckoning for a coveted place at the European Junior Championships in July.
Lancaster said: “Danny was in great form in both fights.
“In his first fight, he dominated more or less throughout the three rounds and his body punching was excellent.
"The Welsh lad was even forced to take an eight-count in the third round.
"It was a tougher fight the following day, but still Danny wore down his opponent and emerged a worthy winner by 27 points to 10.”
Lancaster added: “We’re all over the moon for Danny.
“It’s been an amazing few weeks, and to top it all with a call-up to the Euro’s squad would be just amazing.”
