WATERHEAD Warriors exited the BARLA National Cup, losing 8-6 to holders Thornhill Trojans, but joint coach Jon Perks was delighted with the display.
Falling behind to a converted try, followed by a penalty, the Peach Road club hit back with a touch down from Jamie Mayall, which he goaled.
With the clock ticking, Waterhead poured forward and were held up a couple of times with the line agonisingly in sight.
Perks said: "The result was irrelevant to be honest, it was about how we performed, and it was good.
"It was a new-look side with some players coming back to us from Saddleworth Rangers, and they showed a lot of commitment for the badge.
'GOOD STUFF'
"We had chances to win the game at the end, but we couldn't fault them for effort. We played some really good stuff."
There was a decent turn-out for the first-round tie. Perks added: "We trying to get it back to how it was.
"We had a sponsors' night on Friday and that went really well, so hopefully we can build on that interest."
Perks and his Waterhead coaching side-kick Keith Brennan continue their preparations for the new National Conference League season with a trip to Leyland on Saturday, February 18.
