Saddleworth take a grip on cup tie

SADDLEWORTH are on course for their fifth Tanner Cup final appearance in seven years after dismissing Greenfield for 85 last night.

And it was Mark Lees — a junior at Greenfield — who instigated his former club’s downfall in the quarter-final tie at Well-i-Hole.

Lees took four for 18 and Steve Holmes helped himself to three for 16, which included two wickets in one over.

It could have been much worse for Greenfield, who were reinstated into the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s knock-out competition after Hollinwood were found to have fielded an ineligible player in round one.

They were 16 for four — overseas amateur Ryan Nurse was out first ball — before a fifth-wicket stand off 45 between Chris Gill (32) and Johnny Ainley (32) rescued them from total capitulation.

Heyside are slight favourites in the other last-eight clash at Moorside, where the hosts were bowled out for 178 in exactly 45 overs.

Richard Baines, who scored a century when the two teams met in the league on Saturday, hit 30, Kashif Khan smashed a rapid 29 and overseas amateur Lloyd Kingston made 28. There were also 30 extras.

Tony Heaton took three for 39 from his nine overs and there were two wickets apiece for Nick Campbell and Lee Watkinson.

Both matches resume at 6.30pm tonight.
