AN Oldham basketball player is planning for an all star future thanks to a grant from Asda.
England under-18 men’s basketball player Connor Gent, from Meadow Lane, Garden Suburb, has been named as one of the first recipients of the Sporting Chance grant.
Identified as one of the UK’s best sportsmen of the future, Connor (18) will receive £500 to use for travel expenses and equipment.
Talent
Asda, with the help of SportsAid, has compiled a list of the best emerging young talent in the UK and Connor was chosen along with over 300 other potential sporting stars across the country.
Over the next five years, the store will be giving out a further nine £500 grants and provide further support to each athlete.
Connor also plays for the Manchester Magic team and, despite having taken up basketball relatively late, his talent and commitment are taking him to the top.
He is already in training for the European championships which will be held in Hungary on July 24.
However, he is setting his sights on a US basketball scholarship next year, when he has completed his A-levels.
Connor said: “I’m so happy and grateful that Asda has chosen me to receive the grant.
“I spend a lot of money on travelling to various training sessions around the country and this contribution will help a lot.
“I love playing basketball and it is a very exciting time for me. I am training hard towards my future in basketball, both at home and hopefully in the States.”
