Brookdale bounce back to top form
Date published: 09 July 2008
JUST when it looked like Brookdale ‘A’ were faltering, they have made a decisive surge clear at the top of the Oldham Golf League.
Having been held to a 4-4 home draw the previous week, John Uren’s men produced a 7-1 win over Dukinfield.
And with nearest rivals Denton going down 6-2 at Ashton, Brookdale now lead by a handsome 12 points with only four games to play.
Pete Buckley and Garry Smith led the way with a 4 and 3 win while Gary Lever and Brad Keeling won 2 and 1 and Mike Taylor birdied the last from off the green to clinch victory with partner Russell Wood.
They were only denied the whitewash when Mark Riley and John Hughes were held to a half for the second week in a row, this time by Martin Schofield and Gary Hobson.
Oldham continue to improve and moved up to third in the table with a 5-3 win over visiting neighbours Saddleworth.
Werneth have now gone three league games without a win, the latest a disappointing 6-2 home defeat to Stamford, the side they face next month in the semi finals of the knockout cup.
The home side’s only points came from Steve McNamara and Adie Buckley.
It’s all much tighter in the race for the ‘B’ division title though Brookdale will be much the happier after both they and joint leaders Denton drew 4-4.
Brookdale’s was an excellent result away at Dukinfield while Denton will have been hoping for better than a share of the spoils at home to Ashton.
Saddleworth ‘B’ saw off Oldham ‘B’ 6-2 with wins for Steve Baron and Brian Rooney (5 and 3), Bernard Andrew and Glyn Dixon (3 and 2) and
Dennis Lamb and Steve Wild (2 and 1).
Oldham’s points came via Ted Rae and Pete Sparks (3 and 2).
Week 10 results — A Division: Brookdale 7, Dukinfield 1; Werneth 2, Stamford 6; Oldham 6, Saddleworth 2; Ashton 6, Denton 2.
B Division: Saddleworth 6 Oldham 2; Stamford 8, Werneth 0; Dukinfield 4, Brookdale 4; Denton 4, Ashton 4.
