LOCAL cricket players had a starring role as Lancashire defeated Derbyshire to win through to the last 16 knockout phase of the national over-50s championship.
Lancashire, captained by Crompton’s Alan Whiston, enjoyed a six-wicket win at Atherton in their final Northern Counties game.
Derbyshire were restricted to 163 for five from their 45 overs, a fine achievement bearing in mind they were 60 without loss after 10 overs.
Former Royton and Werneth player John Punchard conceded only 14 runs from his nine overs, Littleborough’s Chris Dearden took two for 25 and Tony Potter, three for 24.
Lancashire, who proceed to the last 16 along with Yorkshire, coasted to victory with seven overs to spare, making 164 for four. Mike Ingham top scored with 44 while there were also important knocks from Gary Crossley (36) and Glenn Bullock (35 no).
