SADDLEWORTH’S Stephen Pullen scored a dramatic victory, which included a hole-in-one, in a representative junior match for the Huddersfield and Halifax District Union.

The 16-year-old was four holes down with six holes to play in his singles match against the Sheffield Union at Meltham.

Stephen squared his match on the 17th after holing from the tee - his first-ever ace - with a three iron from 185 yards before triumphing on the 18th.

Earlier Stephen and Crossland Heath’s Michael Lawrie won their foursomes match at the last hole.

Sadly Stephen’s efforts proved in vain as the Huddersfield and Halifax District Union lost the closely-contested match by one point.

But Stephen’s fine form over the season is reflected by his second place in the HHDU’s Junior Order of Merit. Saddleworth team-mate Ben Simpson is third in the table.

THE Stratstone SAAB Manchester Hole in One Challenge offers lucrative prizes for anybody scoring an ace in the men’s open four-man team event at Brookdale’s Festival Week.

And that includes a SAAB convertible worth £26,945 for an ace at the 17th, golfing holidays at the 11th and 14th and full sets of irons worth £750 at the fifth and seventh.

“Normally you only get prizes like this at big corporate golf days so for a club like ours to secure them is special,” said Brookdale’s Mark Leigh.

Festival Week is from August 10/15 and features open events - mixed on Sunday, ladies Monday, seniors Tuesday, pro-am Wednesday and men’s four-man team Friday.

The pro-am is already fully subscribed with 24 teams including former Asian Tour professional Jon Cheetham.

Also in the field are other leading North West professionals Simon Edwards, Kieran Doherty, Adam Stott and Anthony Millar.

Tee times for other events can be reserved by telephoning 0161 681 4534.

MARTYN Hamer’s disappointing final-round 76 saw him finish in a tie for 21st place in the Automatic Retailing PGA North Region Championship at Burgham Park.

The Chadderton Fold-based Hamer had been in contention in the 54-event after following his opening 73 with a superb 68.

The event was won by Bridlington’s Alex Belt who collected £3,000 for a nine-under-par 207.

Three other local professionals - Mark Smith (Stamford), Kristopher Bielecki (Saddleworth) and Nick Deme (Brookdale) all failed to make the cut for the final round.

Crompton and Royton’s Martin Beaty shot a two-over-par 72 to finish in a tie for sixth place in the Werneth Low pro-am.

DUKINFIELD stay top of the Oldham and District Rabbits League following their 8-0 home win against bottom-club Oldham.

Houldsworth remain only one point behind after their 8-0 victory at Fairfield, while Brookdale, who defeated Stamford 6-2, are a further eight points adrift.

SADDLEWORTH failed in their bid to win a place in the quarter finals of the Dunham Forest Trophy as they lost 5-2 at Hazel Grove.

The hosts sealed victory with two matches still on the course so Marcus Wray and Martin Orme were deemed to have halved their games. Eddie Mills (2 & 1) was the lone local winner.
