BROOKDALE ‘A’ have regained the Oldham and District Golf League ‘A’ division title.
Having had their run of four consecutive titles ended last year by Dukinfield, normal service was resumed under under new captain John Uren as they clinched success with a 6-2 away win at neighbours Werneth.
There were wins for Gary Lever and Russell Wood and Charlie Clough and Brad Keeling while Pete Buckley clinched the new trophy for individual top point scorer in the division in bizarre fashion.
He and Jonathan Spicer were one up going down the last but when both lost their drives, Buckley pegged it up again, made a birdie with his second ball, and it was enough for a half on the hole against Mike Fogo and Andy heyand the narrowest of victories. James Buckley and Paul Egan claimed the only home success.
That away victory meant Denton had to win their last two fixtures 8-0 to claim the title and, when they went down 6-2 at Dukinfield, they even surrendered second spot.
Oldham are still chasing a good league finish but could only draw 4-4 at home to Stamford with Lee Melia and Lee Blainey (1 hole) and halves for Steve Daubney and Phil Docherty and Paul Pattinson and Norman Radcliffe.
Brookdale are poised to make it a league double with their ‘B’ team needing just a draw at Oldham in a rearranged fixture to take the honours.
That was despite a 6-2 defeat in a rearranged game at nearest rivals Denton but they bounded back to beat bottom club Werneth 8-0 while Denton could only set a smaller target with a 5-3 win over Dukinfield.
Brookdale’s winners in the derby match were Keith Loftus and Tony Bergin, Gary and Graham Whittaker, Paul Fry and Dave Harrison and
Mike Arnside and Gary McHue.
Paul Fry leads the individual points scorers in the ‘B’ division, an all Brookdale affair with closest rivals being team-mates the Whittaker brothers and Keith Loftus. The game at Lees New Road should decide that as well as the league.
Tonight sees the KO Cup semi-finals take place with Dukinfield ‘A’ facing Denton ‘A’ at Stamford and Stamford ‘A’ versus Werneth ‘A’ at Saddleworth.
