Millgate first as holders retain title

ALAN Entwistle and Barbara Shuttleworth created a piece of history when they became the first pair to successfully defend the Millgate Trophy at SADDLEWORTH in its 50-year-history.

They had a score of 82-16.5-65.5 which was three shots clear of runners-up Mark Statham and Bev Scholes, from Oldham, who returned 77-8.5-68.5.

Third were Paul and Jane Wild (85-16-69) while fourth place went to Mick Harrington and Deborah Mooney (89-16.5-72.5).

The best gross score was 73 from Werneth’s Lee Rowbotham and Fiona Dooley.

The Millgate Trophy was given to Saddleworth in 1958 by George Parfett who lived at Millgate, Delph, and the inaugural winners were Mr and Mrs F Preston, from Werneth.

The Jubilee Trophy saw Phil Paxford top the field with a score of 78-12-66 from second-placed Stuart Potts (77-9-68) while third place went to Malcolm McVeigh (85-16-69).

Steve Gaynon came out on top in the monthly medal thanks to a score of 87-19-68.

He finished a shot clear of Richard Cotton (80-11-69), who edged out Nigel Hughes (75-6-69) on a card play-off.

BROOKDALE’S club championship saw Mark Riley emerge the victor with rounds of 69 and 75 for a two-round total of 144.

Second was Peter Buckley on the card from Steve Boyle as both had identical returns of 72 and 73 for 145.

The first-round prize went to Sam Carroll (74) while in the second round the honours went to Alan McQuaid.

Wyn Witham had every reason to remember the Brookdale Cup as he scored a hole-in-one on the difficult par three 11th.

STAMFORD’S monthly medal saw vice captain Ian Grimsditch (69-5-64) emerge the first division victor on the card from Dave Allen 976-12-64).

Vince Whelan (83-16-67) topped division two on the card from Barry Stokes (83-16-67) and Alan Johnston (84-17-64).

Jim Smith (89-21-68) edged out Philip Clegg (91-23-68) on the card for first place in division three.

Winners of a four-ball betterball medal at OLDHAM were Dave Taylor and Gary Lee (58) on the card from Colin Ingle and Gordon Tilzley. Third were Ray Buckley and Dave Beech (59).

Tony Caveney and Paul Butler headed the field in a four-ball betterball Stableford after amassing 44 points.

Runners-up were Norman Radcliffe jnr and Norman Radcliffe (43) on the card from Terry Garrett and Geoff Proctor.

CROMPTON AND ROYTON’S three man-team Stableford was won by Robert Hopkinson, Brent Cannings and Terry O’Connor with a score of 87 points.

They finished two points clear of runners-up Colin, Alan and Alex Hopkinson.

Jordan Flint (73-5-68) claimed the first division honours in a medal from second-placed Brian Smithies (78-9-69).

Mick Flint (76-14-62) was the clear winner of division two from runner-up Chris O’Neill (77-12-65).

And Tony Morton (79-18-61) topped division three by a mile from Flynn Parry (84-17-67).

A singles Stableford at WERNETH was won by Paul Rowbotham with 41 points — his third straight win — rom runner-up Danny Wilkinson (40pts).
