Squire turns on style

STEVE Squire claimed the prized scalp of Noel Burrows as Tonge won 10-4.5 (177-172) at Sale XL in the Manchester Premier League.

Burrows, who has won just about every major tournament crown green bowls has to offer, was no match for the Tonge player despite having home advantage.

Squire won 21-13 to complement wins by Mark Dwayre (21-15), Jimmy Derby (21-13), Gary Ellis (21-12) and Darren Griffiths (21-14).

Tonge’s next match is at home to Longwood on Wednesday (7.30pm).




SADDLEWORTH League’s Law Swallow Cup semi-finals and final will be held at Hollinwood Cricket Club on Sunday (11am) when the draw is:



Church Inn (8) v Nimble Nook (16); Waterloo and Taunton ‘A’ (1) v Springbank ‘A’ (3).

Refreshments are available throughout the day.




STEVE Mellor and Barry Seville (Chadderton) defeated A Weeks and I Johnstone 21-14 to reach the finals of the Thwaites men’s pairs at Norden BC.



Mellor and Seville will play Tonge’s Mark Dwayre and Thomas Dobson in the quarter-finals on Sunday (5.30pm) when the rest of the draw is:

I Holden and D Wood v H Hargreaves and R Horman; B Oakes and A Lowe v A Dewhurst and P Golbourne; P Fielding and B Collinge v B Yates and D Horton.

The AC Ventilation women’s finals will be held at the same time as the men’s competition

TONGE’S Nicky Brooks and Colin Lane are among a clutch of Central Lancs and Pennines representatives in the British Parks Merit at Hare Hill BC, Littleborough, on Sunday (10am).






THE Oldham Veterans Indoor League annual meeting will be held at Stanley Road Conservative Club on Wednesday (10.30am).
