STUART Wagstaffe had to swap his apron for a shirt and tie after winning the Centenary Trophy at Oldham.

The 60-year-old, from Royton, was busy looking after the burgers and sausages for a family barbecue when he got the call he craved.

It was Wagstaffe’s first major success of his career and in the last Oldham and District event of the season.

The 16-handicapper shot a 79 nett 63 to finish two shots clear of OIdham club-mate Mike Allen (74-9-65), while Brookdale’s Paul Deighton (75-9-66) was third.

Wagstaffe, who started playing golf in 1992, dashed back to the club to pick up his prize before returning home with trophy in hand to carry on cooking.

“One of my partners, David Hewitt, thought I was in with a chance if I could keep it together over the back nine,” reflected the Oldham committee member and former Springhead footballer.

“The 17th down the hill was tricky. The wind was pushing the ball left to right towards the out of bounds, but I managed to come off with a par.

“I birdied the 15th thanks to a 20ft putt and I had pars on every par three.

“They are only small greens and they say at Oldham if you can do that, then you know you’re playing well.”

The best gross on the day was recorded by Lee Newsome with 70.

Also at Oldham, Colin Holmes (81-21-60) and Steve Ogden (80-20-60) are tied at the top after the first round of the Clegg Cup. They are two shots ahead of Gary McDonald, who carded 71-9-62.

The second and final round is on Saturday week.
