Three and easy for Rowbotham

LEE Rowbotham produced a remarkable scoring burst in his Captain’s Prize victory at Werneth.
Rowbotham started his second round with six successive threes, a run which included four birdies, as he finished with a three-under-par second-round gross 65 for a nett 63.

That, along with a first-day score of 68–2–66 gave Rowbotham a two-round total of 129 nett.

Three shots behind in second spot was Lee’s second-round playing partner Pete Barrington whose 132 comprised rounds of 77-13-64 and 81-13-68.

Rowbotham’s father Paul recorded the best gross return outside the top two with 73 and 70 for 143.

The first division first-day prize was won by Adrian Buckley (66-5-61) while in the second round that honour went to Mark Wareing (75-12-63).

Ian Grant (79-15-64) had the best second division nett score in the opening round while in the second that prize was claimed by Lawrence Dawson (81-14-67).

Paul Farrimond also scored a hole-in-one at the 153-yard 15th in the opening round.

John Early won SADDLEWORTH’S President’s Prize with a two-round total of 158-22-136.

Steve Gaynon finished runner-up on 173-36-137, while third place went to Mark Anderson-Wild with 156-18-138 and the second-day prize was scooped by Dave Park (71-5-66).

The Seniors Open produced a win for Louis Cordwell and Mel Colgan, who recorded 42 points.

That pipped Jack Ingham and David Butterworth (41pts) who took second on the card from Gerry Hobbs and Ray Pemberton.

Top spot in an Am-Am competition went to Ron Akin and Luke Prenty with 43 points, from Steve Baron and Andy Dunster (42) and Mick Thompson and Gary Ormerod (41).
The Wood Bowl at STAMFORD saw Clive Barnes capture his first club major in the singles bogey competition.

He had a score of six up against the course as he edged out runner-up Roy Cunningham on the card.

Tony Hales also scored a hole-in-one in the competition as his ace came at the 14th.

Joe Loughman lifted the Wainwright Cup at BROOKDALE following a card play off.

Loughman’s return of 79-16-63 was the same nett total as Gary Whitaker whose score was 77-14-63. Third was John Wilson (82-18-64).

Ian Radcliffe finished two shots clear of the field as he won the Albert Warren Trophy with a score of 67-6-61.

Runner-up was Dave Kay (74-11-63) on the card from Mike Allen (72-9-63).

Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were Ray Fry and Peter Dunbar (46pts) on the card from Alan Squires and Steve Rae. Third place went to Dave Taylor and Gary Lee (45).

Leading the field at the mid-way stage of the 36-hole President’s Prize at

CROMPTON AND ROYTON is Steve Sharrock after a round of 83-16-67.

In joint second place one shot behind are Peter Graham (74-6-68) and Graham Walker (77-9-68).

The second round takes place on Saturday.

The best score of the day was recorded by junior Andrew Bottomley-Clift with 82-16-66, though he is not eligible for the main prize.

In the separate Junior President’s Prize, the winner was Matthew Schofield with a score of 89-25-64.


CHADDERTON Fold’s Martyn Hamer finished five shots behind winner Scott Barber in the Leeds Cup at Cobble Hall.

But the rounds of 70. 69 and a closing 65 earned Hamer, assistant professional at Ellesmere, 14th place in the 54-hole PGA North Region event.

Two shots further behind, but still on the leaderboard, was Crompton and Royton’s Martin Beaty who shot 69, 69 and 68 for 206.


JANE Wild won a two-ball Stableford at Saddleworth with 37 points, beating Deborah Mooney, who finished on 34.
