Death of League Stalwart

Date published: 28 August 2008

TRIBUTES have been paid to Saddleworth and District Cricket League umpire David Davenport, who died suddenly at the age of 62.

David, who also a life-long fan of the Oldham rugby league club, officiated the Shaw versus Friarmere second-team fixture only two days before his death.

League chairman and fellow umpire Eddie Bayliss said: “David was a very reliable man and was never late for an appointment.

“He enjoyed a laugh and a joke on the field and it has come as a real shock to here of his death. He will be sadly missed.”

David was good friends with Glodwick Cricket Club and became a regular member of their annual tour to the south of England.

Players from the Warren Lane club wore black armbands in honour of David last weekend.

His proudest moment as an umpire came when he stood in a match featuring a young Brian Lara, who was acting as a deputy professional in a Saddleworth League fixture.

A popular member of the umpires’ panel, he would only officiate on Saturdays as Sundays were reserved for watching his beloved Oldham.

A lottery agent for the club, he followed the Roughyeds home and away.

David’s funeral will take place on Monday, September 1 at Oldham Crematorium (11.30am).
