Buckley spirits lifted by Pauley

CHADDERTON, whose future remains in doubt, are finding that good can come out of adversity after unearthing another jewel.

Chris Pauley, recently captured from local Manchester League side Springhead, is already attracting attention from other clubs. And after only a handful of games, it looks as though the Broadway club is going to have difficulty hanging on to the 20-year-old left-back.

Pauley, a former pupil at Counthill School, has already been subject of a transfer inquiry from Atherton LR who play one division higher in the Vodkat North West Counties League. Atherton LR put in seven days notice of approach to speak to the player, but Pauley has pledged his future to the Broadway club.

Though Pauley is a defender, he is surprisingly Chadderton’s leading scorer with three goals.

Buckley, who has lost many of his most experienced players, remarked: “Chris has done exceptionally well and all three of his goals have been screamers from long range as he has a good left foot.

“He is a player I worked with while I was at Springhead and broke into their first team halfway through last season. This is another step up for Chris, but he has handled it well so far, and he has been a breath of fresh air.”

Chadderton continued their splendid run in the reserve division with a 2-0 victory at New Mills where Chris Carruthers scored both goals.

OLDHAM TOWN striker Darren Scanlan is also a player in demand, with Glossop North End submitting a seven days notice to approach their hot-shot.

Town are confident Scanlan, last season’s 25-goal leading scorer despite missing a number of games through work commitments, will be staying at the Whitebank Stadium.

Town again discovered how cruel and unforgiving football can be last night as they crashed out of the FA Cup following their 3-0 preliminary-round replay defeat at Rossendale United.

It was only after Town, denied victory by an injury-time equaliser on Saturday, were reduced to 10 men following Leon Melia’s sending off for two bookings with 12 minutes left that Rossendale stamped their authority on the game with two late goals to seal victory.

Until that juncture all that separated the teams was John Turner’s 20th minute strike which followed a breakaway down the left. But Town could have been two goals ahead by then as Stuart McGill had struck the crossbar and Melia forced a fine save from keeper Lee Bracey.

Town’s newly-formed youth team made a winning bow defeating Salford City Colts 3-1 in their first match in the North West Youth Alliance.

The goalscorers for Town were Haider Zeb, Calum Beckett and Bilal Khaliq.
