Batty takes top spot in medal

DAVE BATTY had cause to celebrate as Stamford were the only local club to beat the rain over the weekend.
They miraculously managed to stage their September monthly medal with Batty (69-5-64) claiming the first-division prize on the card from Neil Pragnall (77-13-64).
Dave Salisbury (77-15-62) finished clear of the field in division two from second-placed Mike Bardsley (79-14-65).
But the most emphatic margin of victory was recorded by Michael Taylor (83-21-62) as he finished five shots clear of runner-up Roger Huin (87-20-67).
BROOKDALE’S club competitions were cancelled, though they managed to play three of their matchplay knockout finals.
The President’s Final saw 67-year-old Arthur Tattersall defeat Gary McHugh 2 & 1 over 36 holes in the singles.
Doug Jones and Mark Morrow overcame Peter Walker and Tony Wardlesworth 4 & 3, also over two rounds, in the President’s Doubles.
And the mixed knockout for the Dr Fitzgerald Cup was won by Jonathan Spicer and Kath Storey.
They defeated Geoff and Jean Clarke in the final which was all square after 18 holes before they triumphed 2 &1 in a six-hole play-off.
The results of the previous week’s Jubilee Trophy have been confirmed with Paul Wood and John Wilson scoring a remarkable 50 points in the Stableford.
They finished four clear of runners-up Bill Hilton and Ian Thomas.
WERNETH’S midweek American greensome medal, a 13-hole medal, saw Ken Baker and Louis Cordwell (34) triumph from closest challengers Ian Turner and Terry Rooney (38.5).
CROMPTON and Royton golfers made their 39th annual pilgrimage to Scotland where they contested the Gullane Pot.
Jim Quinn triumphed in the singles Stableford scoring 36 points at Longniddry.
WOMEN’S SECTION
MR President’s Prize at BROOKDALE produced victory for Wendy Ryan (98-30-68) from runner-up Vicky Akin (89-20-69).
Truda Dexter amassed 37 points in a singles Stableford to win the Marion Read Trophy at SADDLEWORTH to finish three clear of second-placed Eileen Simpson.
LEE Westwood’s hopes of taking part in the Ryder Cup remain in doubt after his agent confirmed he has still not fully recovered from a serious bout of tonsillitis contracted nine days ago.
Westwood will miss the Mercedes–Benz Championship which starts in Cologne tomorrow.
