Quitting pays off

CASH-STRAPPED Chadderton Football Club has received an unexpected £1,500 windfall thanks to Oldham Athletic.

The Boundary Park club has been promoting a campaign aimed at encouraging youngsters to quit smoking.

And as part of the Oldham Primary Care Trust initiative which is Government backed, Athletic were asked to nominate a local non-league club to become involved.

Athletic, mindful of Chadderton’s dire financial problems, nominated the local club which, in return for carrying the ‘Quit It’ message on their shirts, will receive £1,500.

Athletic chief executive Alan Hardy said: “We have been involved with the campaign since earlier this year.

“It involves carrying the ‘Quit It’ message on the shirts and training gear for our youth and centre of excellence teams.

“When we were asked to nominate a local non-league team to also become involved we immediately through of Chadderton because they need as much help as possible at the moment.”

Chadderton spokeswoman Claire Egerton said: “The money will be a massive boost and has been gratefully accepted.

“It is nice that Oldham Athletic support little teams like ourselves.”
