Lake Garage CLL; Booze clampdown
Date published: 11 September 2008
SPECTATORS will no longer be allowed to take their own alcohol to the final of the John Willie Lees Wood Cup after trouble flared at this year’s showpiece game at Werneth.
It is believe the problems were fuelled by alcohol as some supporters were seen arriving carrying crates of beer.
Monton and Weaste made a written complaint to the CLL, alleging verbal abuse and threatening behaviour by a small number of Heywood fans at the final.
Heywood admitted a group of non-members were guilty of such behaviour but they also claimed Monton and Weaste fans were also to blame, and this allegation was supported by a letter from a Middleton member.
The CLL management committee has written to both clubs “abhorring” such behaviour.
Gate receipts for the final of this year’s Wood Cup were £2,550. After costs were deducted, both finalists and the league received £493 apiece.
Takings for the group games in the John Willie Lees Twenty20 Competition were £3,476.
Monton and Weaste took £520 at the gate for their Twenty20 final against Unsworth.
