Dave wins in photo finish

DAVE GRIFFITHS had a nerve-jangling victory in the Fairway Cup at Werneth after three players returned nett 65.

Griffiths (76-11-65) triumphed in a card play-off against runner-up John Mellors (84-19-65) and Joe Cassidy (72-7-65).

A subsidiary medal, for those not among the 36 finalists, was won by Ian Turner (71-11-60) from Paul Rowbotham (65-1-64).

STUART Fletcher won a three-way card play-off for top spot in the Lowe Trophy, a major at STAMFORD.

Fletcher (73-9-64) edged out David Batty (69-5-64) and Alan Gledhill (78-14-64), who were second and third respectively.

Winners of the open-day betterball Stableford were Andy Earlam and Dan Rice (48 points), from Scott and Lee Merson (46).

GARY Lee heads the field at the halfway stage of OLDHAM’S Dunkerley Cup after shooting an opening 72-12-60.

Ian Radcliffe (67-5-62) lies second, while one stroke further behind are Ian McGloughlin (75-12-63), Paul Pattinson (72-9-63) and Alex Simmons (84-21-63).

It was very much a family affair in the aggregate Stableford, where father-and-son pairings from the Radcliffe family took the top two spots.

Winners were Norman and Norman jnr (79pts), while runners-up were Ian and Matthew (77). Third were Mark Ruff and Bernard Wolfenden (75).

THE Johnson Cup, a bogey competition at BROOKDALE, produced a victory for Doug Jones, who was two up against the course.

Runner-up was Eric Hyland (1up), on the card from Gavin Hulse. Fourth was Keith Loftus (level).

BEN Simpson landed the junior club championship at SADDLEWORTH after shooting a gross round of 73.

Runner-up was Stephen Pullen (77), while third place went to Jack Shaw (82).

Winner of a subsidiary 12-hole medal was Ben Pullen.

Saddleworth’s successful junior side have been drawn at home to Birchwood in the semi-finals of the Manchester and District Alliance’s BMW Challenge on Sunday, September 28.

The President’s Invitation became the latest casualty of the wet weather.

CROMPTON and ROYTON staged a four-ball Stableford which saw Peter Boggiano and Dave Whitworth (41 points) resist the challenge of Cameron and Nigel Wylie (40).
