Young Billy follows in his father’s footsteps

FORMER Oldham and Great Britain star Barrie McDermott watched intently as son Billy proved to be a chip off the old block at the Oldham Schools’ Year Seven rugby league festival.
McDermott junior was part of the Saddleworth School side who came out on top in the eight-a-side competition held at Manor Park, defeating Blue Coat by four tries to nil in the final.
The other members of the victorious Saddleworth squad were Matthew Fletcher (Captain), Paul Ainsworth, Sam Akeroyd, Matthew Jackson, William Revill, Jacob Charnock, Matthew D’Adamo, Daniel Fairfoull, Isaac Johnson and player of the tournament James Tetlow, who scored four tries in total.
Counthill finished second and Hathershaw third, in a competition also featuring teams from Our Lady’s, Crompton House and Radclyffe.

Under-15s: Hindley 16, Saddleworth Rangers 20 (tries: Sam Rhodes, Jordan Arundale, Kurtis Smith, Nathan Shaw-Langhorn; goals: Shaw-Langhorn 2).
Under-13s: Haydock Warriors 8, Oldham St Anne’s 32 (tries: Callan Whittaker, Kyle Saunders, Hayden Wardle, Jack Marsden, Joel Walker; goals: Ashley Forde 6).
Under-12s: Chorley 24, Saddleworth Rangers 0.
