CHARITY was the big winner as Saddleworth hosted the Joan Hirst Cup - an Oldham Ladies Golfers’ Association event which raised £500 for arthritis research.
Twenty-two teams took part in the event and the winners were Brookdale duo Julie Pickering and Sue Boothby and Werneth’s Jane Clarke with 78 points.
They finished well clear of Saddleworth’s Jean Barnes, Jean Hurst and Kay Whitehead who were runners-up with 71 points on the card from another Saddleworth team comprising Julie Ward, Pam Taylor and Pauline Richardson.
A team from Northcliffe, Bradford, triumphed in the annual women’s shotgun at Crompton and Royton.
They headed a 23-team field with a score of 74 points in the Stableford, three clear of Lynn Truelove, Jacquie Banham, Pauline Givvons, from the hosts, and Oldham’s Mary Buckley.
Runaway winners of a greensome medal were Jean Heathcote and Maureen Delaney (68.6) from second-placed Noreen Nicholson and Shirley Brown.
A two-ball Stableford at WERNETH, which also doubled up as the Grandmothers Trophy, saw Brenda Jarvis capture top spot in both competitions.
She scored 34 points in the singles Stableford, one ahead of first division sweep winner Sheila Whittingham.
Tied for the second sweep in the first division were Sheila Waterhouse and Fiona Dooley (32pts).
The second division sweeps went to Nadine McNamara (30pts) from Judith Wilkinson and Sheila Lees (both 29).
The LGU medal at BROOKDALE, which also incorporated the Miss Wood Cup, was won by Susan Whitaker (94-20-74) from runner-up Norma High (98-22-76).
The LGU medal and Pendant at SADDLEWORTH saw Pam Taylor (91-25-66) take top spot from Teresa Stevenson (94-27-67).
