Mossley cash in on fine FA cup run

MOSSLEY pulled off their first FA Cup giantkilling act for four years following Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Kendal Town.

And the success in the second qualifying round earned the Lilywhites a pay cheque for £4,500.

They have now banked £9,000 from their cup run and are only two wins away from a place in the first round proper.

After beating Vodkat North West Counties League opponents in the first two rounds, Kendal from the UniBond League, premier division provided by far the toughest challenge, especially as they had to travel to Cumbria.

But Mossley’s fine start to the season continued as they produced a battling performance to cause an upset against opponents riding high in fifth place in the premier division.

Mossley took the lead on the stroke of half time with a close-range shot from left-winger Lee Blackshaw.

Craig Hobson equalised for Kendal early in the second half and for a 20-minute spell Mossley had to weather a storm from the home side.

They survived and finished the game strongly and it was no surprise when they conjured an 80th winner.

Mike Fish broke through the Kendal defence and squared the ball for Leon Henry to find the net with a tap-in from a couple of yards.

OLDHAM Town ground out a 1-0 home victory against Stone Dominoes to climb to fifth place in division one of the Vodkat NWCL.

A seventh-minute goal from John Joyce proved the decisive strike in a hard-fought contest.

Dominoes keeper James Hall fumbled a shot and Joyce reacted first to fire home the rebound.

Darren Scanlan and Matt Landregan had first-half openings to increase Town’s advantage, Landregan denied by the legs of Hall.

Town also had further opportunities in the second period, though Dominoes also had their moments with home keeper Matty Blair also making some important saves.

Town have played as many as four fewer games than the clubs above them and are well placed to challenge the top teams.

CHADDERTON’S three-match unbeaten run, which had yielded seven points, came to an end following a 2-0 defeat at Bootle in division one of the Vodkat NWCL.

Anthony Hickie fired Bootle ahead after seven minutes and Carl Dale sealed victory with a 34th minute penalty.

Chadderton remain fourth in the table, but have played more games than most of the teams around them.
