Playing under caretaker manager Matt Poulter, they were in command for the majority of the game against division one new boys Hepworth United and fully deserved their 1-0 victory.

But lady luck was not on their side as they went down to a 2-1 defeat.

In reserve division two, a fine effort from Heyside earned a 2-2 draw at Shepley.

C Rogers cancelled out a penalty on the half-hour mark and they nosed ahead shortly after the interval through B Kingsley, only for Shepley to draw level 10 minutes from time direct from a free-kick.

But Uppermill ‘A’ and Diggle ‘A’ went down 4-2 and 3-0 to New Mill 94 and Westend respectively.

Record intact

Rochdale On-line Alliance

HARLEQUIN maintained their 100-per-cent record in the Rochdale On-line Alliance premier division with a 4-0 win over Sudden Carling.

Tony Roberts scored a first-half double and this was followed up by further strikes from Jon Bland and Dave Wright.

In division two, AFC Royton went down 3-2 against top-of-table Woodbank.

Midfielder Danny Cole and Ryan King, who reacted quickest to a drop ball inside the penalty area, scored for AFC Royton.

A draw looked a fair result, but Woodbank snatched the points in the dying seconds.

Tonge’s late show

Lancashire FA Cup

TURKS Head earned a place in the third round of the Lancashire FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Preston outfit Fulwood East End.

Leading 1-0 at half-time when Andy Eastwood bundled home Simon Orchard’s corner, Fulwood were a much-improved side after the interval and they levelled with a fine header.

But, with seven minutes left on the clock, another corner from the impressive Orchard was powerfully headed home by Phil Tonge.

THE next Oldham Sunday League meeting has been put back a week to Wednesday, October 22, at Heyside Cricket Club (8pm).
