High Crompton CC 2, Royton FC 0: Kick start for High Crompton

STUART LOMAS, the manager of High Crompton CC, was relieved to see his side finally get off the mark in the D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott premier division.
A 2-0 defeat of previously unbeaten Royton FC was the perfect pick-me-up for Lomas following an uncharacteristically slow start to the season.
Lomas said: “As a team we did well and it was good to get our first win.
“Even at this early stage of the season, the gap would have been considerable between ourselves and the leading teams if we hadn’t have won this one.
“This result has kick-started our season and, with Chaddy End next up and a second round tie in the (Manchester County FA) Sunday Cup to follow, this is an important time for us.”
High Crompton had drawn one and lost one of their opening two matches prior to coming up against top-flight pacesetters Royton FC at New Barn playing fields.
Conditions were surprisingly good given the heavy rain the previous night.
Both sides wasted chances early but, when referee Zak Eko spotted a handball offence in the penalty area against a Royton player on the half-hour mark, High Crompton’s Paul Ashton gleefully converted the opportunity.
Christian Fraser doubled High Crompton’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, his crisp half volley from Danny Trainer’s headed pass giving his side what proved to be an unassailable advantage.
Royton manager Lee Barclay said: “It was pretty even for much of the game but our final ball into critical areas was not good enough.
“We weren’t on top of our game but I thought we deserved at least a draw.”
HIGH CROMPTON CC: Pearson, Keating, Smith, Dean, Hulme, Wade, Fraser, Ashton, Bocking, Trainer, Duffy. Subs: Spence, Mulholland, Thomson, Wiley, Higgs.

Trophy wins at the double
HOLLINWOOD and Avro are through to the next round of the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy.
On the face of it 6-1 and 5-2 wins over Fives Athletic and Wythenshawe Town appear straight forward enough, but they were made to work mighty hard.
Hollinwood were drawing 1-1 at half-time at home to Athletic, while Avro were taken to extra time by Town.
Mark Howard was not best-pleased with his side’s performance at the interval, but they responded to their manager’s urgings after the break.
A hat-trick from Gary Brooks, an Alan Beckett double and a Charles McGrath effort secured Hollinwood’s passage.
In the premier division, Royton Town returned to winnings ways with a 4-0 defeat of Stockport Georgians.
The Glebe Street outfit went ahead through Danny Taylor’s 30-yard screamer, before further goals from Ian Hulme, Wayne Dean and Taylor’s second sealed victory.
Springhead completed a fine afternoon’s work for local clubs with a 7-4 win at Denholme United in the West Riding Challenge Trophy.

Match made in heaven!
DIGGLE and Uppermill will be missing key players for their Huddersfield and District League division one derby duel — because of a wedding, writes JOHN GILDER.
Steve Bottom, a ’Mill third-team player, ties the knot on Saturday and at least two players from each camp will attend the ceremony.
The local rivals are in fine form for this weekend’s clash (kick-off 2.15pm), having registered wins in their most recent games.
Matt Poulter has been appointed manager of ’Mill after a successful spell in temporary charge.
Poulter, who has replaced Dave Leach, has made a big impression, steering his side to wins against Hepworth and Wooldale Wanderers.
Poulter said: “We are a lot more organised and the players are enjoying themselves.
“From a personal point of view, I am looking forward to the challenge and I am sure we can do well this season.
“It was a bit of a blow to lose Joe Jacobs to Chadderton FC, but we wish him well.
“As for Saturday, I am not sure which will be the highlight — the match or the wedding!”
Poulter’s squad includes 18-year-old Tommy Bunn, the son of former Latics legend Frankie. He scored in last Saturday’s brilliant victory at Wooldale.
Diggle manager Steve Southern, delighted by his side’s thrilling victory at table-topping Shepley, said: “It has been a very encouraging start and with several new players in the side we are still a work in progress at the moment.
“The win at Shepley said a lot about us in that we have both the capability to achieve something and the fallibility to achieve nothing.”
Squads are —
Diggle (from): McWatt, Platt, M Mayall, B Mayall, L Mayall, Hewitt, Cheetham, Wolfenden, Cullington, Martin, Jones, Goddard, Broadbent, Taylor, Clarke.
Uppermill (from): Scorer, Ventriss, Neild, Heaton, Rainford, Nelson, Stewardson, Potts, Greenwood, Taylor, Fitzpatrick, Thistleton, Bunn, Poulter.
Four-midable Heyside cash-in
TEN-MAN Heyside scored four second-half goals as they brushed aside Five Athletic reserves 4-0 in round one of the Manchester County FA Challenge Cup.
The deadlock was broken when Cashin stroked home a penalty, before two goals in quick succession from Rogers put the visitors in sight of victory.
And Heyside’s passage into the next stage of the competition was assured when Cashin added a fourth late on.
In division one of the Huddersfield and District League, Uppermill followed up their first win of the season with a comfortable 4-1 success at a blustery Wooldale Wanderers.
The home side went into an early lead, but they were restricted to one goal by stand-in ’keeper Kris Ventriss, who made a series of fine saves.
Bunn levelled just before half-time after chasing what was seemingly a lost cause and, buoyed by the equaliser, they went on to command the second period.
Midfield pairing Greenwood and Potts scored from long range, before full-back Fitzpatrick’s curling effort made it number four.
Diggle also picked up maximum points thanks to a superb 3-2 success at Shepley.
In reserve division one, ’Mill made it five wins out of five with a 3-1 defeat of Lepton Highlanders — Said (two) and Tlaskel got the goals — while the ‘A’ team overcame Scholes 6-4 in division two. Faulkener (two), Johnson (two), Boote and Carson did the damage.
Heyside’s second string, showing several changes from the previous week, produced a spirited performance against early-season pacesetters Westend.
Behind to a 20th-minute goal, they equalised through Partington’s effort just before the break.
But, against the run of play in the second period, Westend nosed ahead, before a penalty and a goal five minutes from time completed a 4-1 scoreline.
In the Works League, Austin scored twice for ’Mill thirds in a 2-1 defeat of Moldgreen.
