Late goal ends Mossley hopes

MOSSLEY’S dream of FA Cup glory came to an end following their dramatic 4-3 defeat at Tameside neighbours Curzon Ashton who are now possibly 90 minutes away from a place in the first-round proper.

The Lilywhites recovered from a 3-1 deficit but, with a replay looking likely, they were finally sunk by a late goal from Curzon’s prolific marksman Mike Norton.

Curzon opened the scoring just short of the half-hour mark when Alex Elliott lobbed keeper Liam Higginbotham and it got worse when Phil Edgehill cut in from the left to fire home a second for the hosts.

Mossley halved the deficit when the Edgehill headed Lee Blackshaw’s free kick into his own net as he was challenged by Lilywhites defender Nick Challinor.

Former Chadderton players Edgehill soon made amends by scoring his second goal at the right end.

Challinor scored with a close-range header early in the second period and then Danny Dignan put Mossley on level terms.

But with a replay looming came Norton’s match-winning goal after he was left unmarked in the six-yard box to score with a free header.

OLDHAM TOWN recorded an impressive 6-1 win at Daisy Hill in the first round of the Vodkat League Challenge Cup.

Town made the breakthrough midway through the opening half when Ryan Baldwin scored from close range.

Hill equalised after 31 minutes through Colin McAllister whose shot through a crowd left keeper Matty Blair unsighted. But Town regained the lead on the stroke of half time through Damian Schofield.

Lee Neville scored the third and fourth goals for Town, both terrific long-range free kicks, the first from 35 yards.

Hughes made it 5-1, converting a cross from Neville and Baldwin rounded off the scoring after the Hill keeper could only parry a shot from John Joyce as Town earned a second-round tie at Leek CSOB on Saturday, November 8.

CHADDERTON lost 1-0 at Irlam Town in the same competition with Ryan Hutchinson’s match-winning goal scored with virtually the last kick of the tie.

Hutchinson struck a tremendous free kick from 30 yards which cleared the defensive wall and went into the top corner in off the post.

It was rough justice on Chadderton whose depleted side - they were without 11 regulars - deserved a replay.

And it was a game in which Chadderton reserve keeper Ben Aspinall and opposite number Lee Lambert both played blinders.

Chris Carruthers, Micky Green and Danny Shaw all had decent chances for Chadderton, who handed a debut to young striker Joe Jacobs, in the opening half.

Shaw also had a great opening in the second half which could have given Chadderton the lead while Aspinall also made some great saves until he was finally beaten by Hutchinson’s last-gasp free kick.
