CROMPTON and Royton came out tops when they claimed the team prize in the inaugural Oldham and District Captains invitation weekend held at the English Golf Union’s impressive headquarters at Woodhall Spa.
The quartet of Tony Doidge, Phil Delaney, Mick Nield and Mike Challen came from last to first in the two-day event with a team total of 209.
That was enough to pip both Brookdale and Saddleworth by a single point and Oldham by two, with first-day leaders Werneth slipping back to 205.
First-day fourball honours on the Bracken course went to Brookdale past captain Joe Loughman and Saddleworth guest Marcus Wray (39points) on a card play-off from Terry Garrett (Oldham guest) and Bill Waterhouse (Werneth guest).
The second-day prize over the challenging Hotchkin course went to Saddleworth vice captain Dave Pullen and Brookdale captain Paul Cain on 38 points.
Garrett also won the two-day individual prize among the 20 participants with a 39+37=76 tally.
