Rangers aim to build on success

THE National Conference League spotlight falls on Saddleworth Rangers this weekend, the only local side in action in the competition.

Keith Brennan’s men have a home game against Wath Brow Hornets (2.30pm kick off) — always dangerous opposition, home or away — and the Rangers coach is hoping that his team improves on costly errors prevalent across the last three weeks.

A 10-6 away loss at third-placed Castleford was followed up by an 18-10 home defeat to top-of-the-table Widnes St Marie’s two weeks ago.

And despite arresting the mini-slump with a hard-fought 18-16 victory at Dudley Hill six days ago, Brennan is looking for more.

“Castleford Panthers weren’t better than us but we were dragged down to their level and then against Widnes St Marie’s, we were in it but individual errors cost us,” said Brennan, who hopes to have the strong running Adam Walker (ankle) back in the ranks.

“Even at Dudley Hill last week we weren’t at our best but we did at least play for the full 80 minutes and ended up scoring right at the end.”

Rangers are currently fifth in the division one table, but with games in hand on all four sides above them — all of which, come the end of tomorrow afternoon’s clash with the Cumbrians in Greenfield, they will have faced in the last month.
