A SUPERB 32-10 home win over Ince Rose Bridge booked Waterhead under-15s’ place in the last-eight of the Lancashire Cup.

Dominant in defence and attack, tries by Daniel Yates and Jack Cooke, both converted by Ben Whitehead, put Waterhead 12-0 up by half-time.

The pack continued to make inroads after the break, with props Brandon Meanock, Dillon Maders and Daniel Prestwich and second rowers Josh Johnson and Aaron Webb running hard.

Their efforts were rewarded through another try for Cooke, which Whitehead converted for an 18-0 lead.

Ince responded with a score of their own, before winger Ryan Jones rounded off a flowing move to go over in the corner, Whitehead adding another conversion from the touchline.

A converted try for the visitors gave them hope at 24-10, but a strong finish which included a Whitehead penalty and a try by Adam Steeple, again converted, sent Waterhead into the quarter-finals.

The under-nines faced a tough task at Wigan St Patrick’s but responded to the challenge by playing out of their collective skin, before losing by four tries to two.

Wigan set off strongly and scored a pair of first-half tries despite some tough tackling from the likes of Jayden Moxam and man-of-the-match Joe Thewliss.

Straight from the restart, two good drives from Waterhead set up Dane Taylor to sidestep the first line of defence and crash over with three defenders on his back.

Then, Lewis Wighton-Turner broke down the right and fed Keegan Brennan, who sprinted half the length of the pitch to even the scores. With three minutes remaining, the Wigan side made sure of the result but the team were overjoyed with such a strong performance.
