Howard, Smith lead the way for Harriers

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers pair Adam Howard and Robert Smith led by example in the second race of the Red Rose Cross Country League in Bury.
Howard took second place in the under-13s boys’ race over a wet course in nine minutes 54 seconds and was chased home by Robert Smith (10:17), who produced a strong finish to pass two athletes up the final hill.
Mike Smith had a good run in the under-15 boys’ race, taking 23rd place in 15:44, while in the under-15s race for girls, Jane Courtnall finished 20th in 18:52.
Jane Augsberger did well in the senior race to finish 16th overall in 26:14 and fifth in the under-17s category.
Mike Mannings produced a fine run to finish third overall in the under-20s category in 37:12 and sixth in the senior men’s six-mile race.
D Timperley ran well for 25th position in 39:24, with Owen Flage 61st in 43:03, John Hudson 77th in 44:12 for third in his age group, Brian Schofield 99th in 45:57, Simon Smith 115th in 47:38, Karl Smith 130th in 48:56 and Darren Mannings 132nd in 49:07.
The Harriers team finished sixth overall.
ROYTON Road Runners have been busy pounding the streets at home and abroad.
Stuart Carroll completed the Abingdon marathon in a personal best of two hours 59 minutes and 53 seconds.
Leading a team of 10 Royton athletes in the Majorca marathon was Barry Greaves in 3:19:56. Bernard Goodwin (3:28:01) was next to finish, with veteran Dave Phillips recording 3:37:22 and taking first prize in the over-65s race.
John Higgins and Christopher Eavers had a close battle, recording times of 3:47:02) and 3:47:06 respectively.
John Kane crossed the line in 3:52:44 and Steve Shaw, who was running his fifth marathon this year, finished in 4:05:10.
The club’s current women’s champion, Debbie Shaw, ran the Graz Marathon in Austria in 3:42:9.
Nearer to home, Dave Kershaw took part in the Snowdonia marathon, recording a creditable time of 3:28:22.
He was followed by Ian Casey (3:53:11), Chris Wall (4:14:16), Neil Barker (5:18:22) and Vicky Bramley (5:18:23).
