OLDHAM RUFC A gave a much-improved display as they defeated Burnage’s third team 24-15 at home.
The hard work the Manor Park players have put in on the training pitch started to pay dividends as they made far fewer mistakes as a team.
Oldham’s forwards worked well as an unit while Matty Collins and Phil Graham formed a useful half-back partnership.
Burnage took the lead after dominating the opening 20 minutes, but by half time Oldham had established a 7-5 advantage through a Paul Hilton try which was converted by Danny Simpson.
Hilton scored again early in the second half after another excellent handling move and then Paul Crossley forced his way over the line after a rolling maul as Oldham went 17-5 ahead.
Burnage hit back with two tries as the deficit was reduced to two points. Indeed, the visitors would have gone ahead in the 75th minute had a penalty not struck the inside of the upright.
Oldham sealed victory in the final minute when Collins broke from half way and side-stepped four defenders before scoring by the posts with Simpson kicking the two extra points to make the game safe.
EXTRA A lost 50-5 at Glossop where Steve Kennedy drove over the line for s consolation try late in the match.
It was a good game of open rugby and the scoreline flattered the hosts.
VETS recorded their second league victory of the campaign defeating Sedgley Park fourth team 31-0.
Scrum-half Rick Brierley scored two tries and there were also touchdowns for Alan Pierre, Sam Horsfall and Neil Forsyth.
COLTS triumphed 27-9 at Fleetwood, but not without a few anxious moments.
Fleetwood took advantage of Oldham lapses to kick three first-half penalties as they established a 9-7 lead. Oldham’s try came when the forwards carried the ball over the line as Michael Collinge and Shaun Heginbottom both got a hand on it. Mark Goodman added the conversion.
Oldham hit back in the second half as Owen Davies picked up a loose ball and raced half the length of the field to score. Mark Goodman kicked the conversion and two penalties as they moved 20-9 ahead.
And they completed the scoring with five minutes left when Stuart Brennan raced through the Fleetwood defence to score with Goodman kicking the two extra points.
