Shield success in close finish

IVAN HIBBERT and Barry Lees collected a piece of silverware at SADDLEWORTH after lifting the Schofield Shield.
After being postponed several times, the event was belatedly staged and Hibbert and Lees amassed 73 points in the Stableford to top the field.
But it was a tight finish as Steve Baron and Cliff Bird only missed out on the card for the main prize.
In third place with 71 points were Steve Gaynon and Duncan Midgeley.
Winners of an open turkey shoot were Phil Legg and Ian Cash who accumulated 44 points.
Second were Tim and Nick Edwards (43pts), on the card from Scott Merson and Jamie Hughes.
Ian Turner triumphed after a three -way card play-off to take the first division prize in the monthly medal at WERNETH.
Turner and runner-up John Stockley had identical returns of 76-10-66 while Dave Burton also had the same nett score.
The second division was more clear cut with Les Jones (90-24-66) finishing three shots clear of second-placed Fred Whittingham (84-15-69).
STAMFORD’S monthly medal, which was played over 12 holes, saw John Grainger take the first-division honours with a nett score of 42.3. Second was Alan Gerrish (43).
Martin Taylor (40.3) headed division two by some distance from runner-up Harry Fearnley (44).
Geoff Winterbottom was top of division three on the card from Jim Smith after both returned 45.3.
A four-man team Stableford at OLDHAM saw Lee Blainey, Graham Pendleton, Frank Lawrence and Jack Roberts on top with 94 points.
Second were Pete Sparks, Gary Williams, Paul Rainford and Tim Lobley (93pts), on the card from Ian McGloughlin, Steve Taylor,Barry and Martin Lewis.
Alex Simmons and Paul Pattison amassed 42 points to win a four-ball betterball Stableford.
Alan Squires and John Baines (38pts) were runners-up while Norman Radcliffe and Norman Radcliffe jnr (37) claimed third spot.
CROMPTON and Royton’s four-man team medal, part of their Autumn/Winter League, was won by Norman Firth, Keith Masters, Eric Frier and Brian Howarth with 136.
One shot behind were Bernard and John Brame, Cliff Wood and Les Bithell (137), on the card from Andy Allen, Steve Bowers, Chris King and Landy Wild.
Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford at BROOKDALE were Paul Dunkerley and Duncan Baird who scored 47 points.
Runners-up were Peter Thornley and Les Corner (44pts), on the card from Mike Arnfield and Iain Thomas.
THE final event of the Central Lancashire League Golf Society’s season took place at Stand where Gary Garner, Peter Bailey and Glen Duckworth topped the field with 81 points.
Runners-up were Paul Rocca, Ged Baker and Bob Dalton (80pts) while third place went to Mark Greenwood, Mark Chadwick and Stewart Jackson (77).
