Chadderton stage snatch of the day

CHADDERTON were involved in the snatch of the day as they won 1-0 at AFC Blackpool to climb to fourth place in division one of the Vodkat North West Counties League.

Manager Paul Buckley admitted it was a case of “smash and grab” as John Cregan’s first-half goal proved decisive.

But there were also fine individual performances from goalkeeper Lee Swanson and emergency centre-back Ben Greenidge, who is normally a midfield player.

Chadderton found themselves under the cosh from the start as Blackpool twice struck the woodwork.

They eventually settled and created a number of clear-cut chances, Ian Knapman being especially unlucky when he scored only to have his effort ruled out as Bobby Fulham strayed offside.

Chadderton were also denied a penalty when a shot from Fulham was handled on the goalline by a Blackpool defender but the referee did not spot the offence.

Cregan eventually broke the deadlock shortly before half time with a header from 12 yards following a corner by Adam Whitehead.

Swanson made two further fine saves in the second half as Chadderton defended stoutly.

OLDHAM Town’s promotion hopes in division one were dealt a blow when they were held to a home goalless draw by Daisy Hill.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Town in which they were denied time and time again by Hill keeper Tafadzua Ariberito who had the game of his life.

In the first half Ariberito denied Tom Hughes (twice), Ryan Baldwin and Darren Scanlan as Town could and should have had victory sewn up in the opening half.

It was a similar story in the second period when Town continued to bombard the visiting goal.

They even had a goal ruled out after Matt Landregan’s effort was pushed on to the crossbar by Ariberito and Tim Buxton knocked in the rebound only to be mysteriously flagged, even though he was behind Landregan when he shot.

MOSSLEY suffered an unwanted hat-trick in their 3-1 defeat at Trafford in UniBond League division one north.

It was the Lilywhites’ third successive league defeat and the damage was done by Trafford’s prolific marksman Scott Barlow, who scored a hat-trick.

Mossley made a bright start and took an eighth minute lead through a Mike Fish penalty, his 16th goal of the season.

And they held on to their advantage until the stroke of half time when Barlow fired home the equaliser.

Barlow added two further second-half goals to complete a 19-minute treble and take his season’s total to a remarkable 24 goals as Mossley’s promotion hopes suffered a setback as they slipped to ninth place.
