Bayaar sets sights on Masters title

OLDHAM-based Mongolian fighter Shinny Bayaar will take on a boxer from Spain in Shaw on Sunday for the vacant International Masters super-flyweight title.

Local promoter Jack Doughty’s frantic search for an opponent for Bayaar finally met with success yesterday when he negotiated a deal with Jordi Gallart, from Barcelona.

It was a relief for Doughty who, in a dramatic week, had seen another Spanish opponent pull out after there wasn’t time for him to have the MRI scan which boxers must have before they can fight.

And then a replacement from Georgia also withdrew little over 24 hours after accepting a bout.

“It has been incredibly difficult to find an opponent for Shinny because nobody wants to fight him while there is also a shortage of boxers in his weight,” explained Doughty.

The show at Tara Sports and Leisure Centre also features another title fight as Shaw’s Darren Stubbs boxes for the vacant International Masters light-heavyweight crown.

Stubbs, like Bayaar is a member of Doughty’s Shaw-based Tara stable of fighters, and the HGV class one lorry driver has the biggest bout of his life at the age of 37 when he boxes Sale’s Mark Nilson.

Stubbs did not turn to boxing until the age of 30 when he quit playing football. But he has seen his career flourish and has an impressive record of 16 victories and four losses from his 20 bouts in the paid ranks.

Limeside super-featherweight Alan Winterbottom, another of Doughty’s fighters, makes his professional debut against Mo Khaled, from Sheffield.

Doughty will have a busy afternoon as Rochdale super-featherweight Anser Hussain, another member of his stable, is also in action against Nottingham’s Matin Mohammed.

Tickets for the six-bout show are priced at £35 ringside and £20 elsewhere, and it will be pay on the door.
