Premier big guns crash to Royton rivals
Date published: 27 November 2008
CROMPTON and Royton caused a huge upset in the D&J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup.
Inspired by Daniel Kershaw’s superb four-goal salvo, the David Giblin division one strugglers knocked out top-flight title hopefuls Royton FC.
Dave Thomas was also on target as Crompton and Royton, who sit third from bottom, recorded an emphatic 5-1 win in the second-round tie.
SCALP
Royton Cons’ hopes of claiming a Jack Abbott premier division scalp ended in disappointment as they went down 3-1 at Failsworth Athletic.
Hunt Lane were too good for Royton Athletic — they won 6-2 — and division one championship contenders Khartoum Northern enjoyed a 4-0 win at Springhead Libs.
In an all premier division tie, High Crompton CC and Coppice United face a replay after they fought out a 1-1 draw, while Parkside were awarded a 1-0 win over Coppice Rangers, who could not raise a team.
In a first-round tie carried over, Wellington ‘A’ and Steven Caine FC will also try again after they shared eight goals.
Eight of last weekend’s 15 matches were postponed, and the only league fixture saw Marvin Greenwood FC stretch their lead to four points in division two after a 3-1 defeat of basement boys Waggon and Horses.
