STEVE Hodgeson battered the opposition in the latest of the Chadderton Mill AC winter league matches fished on the club lodge.

Drawn on peg 16, Steve fished to the tins where he found plenty of carp feeding on his maggot, fished at nine metres over a bed of groundbait and micro pellet.

Steve’s biggest carp weighed in at 4lb and he had quite others as he tipped 33lb on to the scales.

Darren Webb was way behind, with his maggot fished on the deck over groundbait at nine metres from peg 12 netting him 13lb 8oz of carp and ide, ensuring he had plenty of bites through the match which was put back an hour to enable the anglers to break the ice.

Alan Shaw (Tight lines) had two decent carp for around 8lb followed by a few bits that fell for double red maggot fished at just six metres.

Graham Mitchell (GTI Gilders) included one small carp and plenty of silver fish that fell for maggot and pinkie fished on the deck at twelve to thirteen metres weighing in 8lb 14oz.

Venue Guide

Rochdale Canal – despite the canal being frozen over, those hearty souls who fancy a few hours will still catch.

Bread punch is, without doubt, the best bait for this time of year with just a decent cupful virtually guaranteeing a few bites.

If you have to break the ice don’t break it too wide and you will catch closer in.

Be very careful when breaking the ice and always make sure that you don’t leave the discarded ice on the towpath where walkers could slip on it.

Park Lake – I drive past every day and haven’t seen a soul on it all week.

The lake is frozen, but again by breaking the ice and fishing bread punch some fish will feed.

Be extra careful though as the banks of the lake do slope and are extremely slippery.
