Carp haul puts Cox in top spot

IAN COX took first place in the latest Chadderton Mill AC winter league match fished on the club lodge, with maggot fished shallow at thirteen metres accounting for plenty of ide and small carp to weigh in 19lb 8oz.

Chris Shaw (Tight lines Shaw) chose red maggot at nine metres fished on the deck over groundbait to catch 17lb 4oz of carp and ide netting him second place on the day.

Conrad Taylor (Gilders Tackle ) clinched third place with his seven carp taken on corn fished at full depth over groundbait amounting to 15lb 4oz.

Organiser Lee Humphries (GTI Luggage) included loads of silver fish in his fourth-placed 13lb 8oz that fell for maggot fished over groundbait.

BRIAN MURPHY was well in front of the rest of the field in the latest of the Border Anglers winter series fished on a revitalised Hollingrove Dam.

Although the big roach that the water was famous for a few years ago look to have disappeared, the water is showing a marked improvement with small roach and skimmers now making up most nets.

Brian fished chopped worm and pinkie at eleven metres where he caught a level 7lb of skimmers and roach, beating runner-up Dave White by a fair way.

Dave fished pinkie and maggot at eleven metres to catch one good skimmer and plenty of smaller roach and skimmers to weigh in 3lb 8oz.

That was too good for Fenton Tennant with his 3lb 7oz net made up of a decent skimmer and some small roach and skimmers that fell for chopped worm and pinkie.

Alan Bolton (Tight lines) put a level 3lb on the scales, netting himself fourth place with 2lb of small roach, the odd skimmer and even a gudgeon or two before adding a 3lb 8oz carp.

The club has, rightly in my opinion, decided to count carp no matter how big as 1lb. The small fish fell for the pole and pinkie while the carp came to the tip.

MARTIN TAYLOR (TRI-CAST Highfield) took third in the Albert Morris open match on the Macclesfield Canal where he caught perch to 2lb 8oz and some roach and skimmers.

Venue Guide

Rochdale Canal – Frozen in most areas but breaking the ice and fishing bread punch will catch you a few fish. Pegs behind the bungalows always worth a few fish.

Huddersfield Narrow Canal – Mossley and Stalybridge lengths for small roach and the odd bream and decent perch.

Ashton Canal – Hard in most areas, although you can usually get a few bites with bread punch. Tip is to feed hardly anything at all.

Chadderton Mill lodge – Members-only match, but whatever the weather this water never fails to produce decent weights. The stocking policy that this club adopts can’t be far wrong as the water produces twelve months a year no matter what the conditions.
