MARK HOWARD has wasted no time in getting himself back into local football following his decision to step down as manager of Hollinwood just before Christmas.
With the full backing of everyone connected with Hollinwood FC, Howard, who was in charge of first team affairs for five-and-a-half years, is to start up a youth section in time for next season.
And former Athletic star Matthew Tipton, now at Droylsden and a mate of Howard’s, has promised to lend a hand in the new venture by taking training and coaching sessions with the youngsters.
Howard said: “This is something I have wanted to do for quite some time.
“It is the way forward for the club, and only with a good youth set-up will Hollinwood prosper.
“It will be the first time that Hollinwood has had a youth section, even though there are some younger players in the club’s third team.
“I would like to take the newly-formed team into the lower divisions of the Manchester League and use it as a stepping stone for the first team.
“Matthew has kindly offered to help out, and it would be good if some of our friendly matches could be played against local professional clubs such as Latics, Bury or Rochdale.”
Howard will take charge of an under-15s side and has already made contact with between 10 to 15 local youngsters who are keen to become involved.
One of those youngsters is Howard’s son, Marc. A 13-year-old goalkeeper, he already stands at more than six feet tall and is described by his father as a ‘colossus’.
It is anticipated that the new team will play their home matches at Lime Lane, Hollinwood.
Howard is keen to hear from more players wishing to get involved, and he can be contacted on 07510 911547.
