OLDHAM RUFC Extra ‘A’ achieved what the first team were unable to do on the same day — defeat local rivals Aldwinians in a league fixture.
The third team posted a 31-12 victory against their Aldwinians counterparts at Manor Park.
Oldham were always in command after they established a 19-5 interval lead.
There were two tries from Mark Martin and another touchdown from Rob Froggatt. Martin added two conversions.
Aldwinians reduced the deficit to 19-12 through an interception try and conversion.
But Oldham reasserted their superiority through a try from Phil Walmsley, who darted over in the corner. Martin added a terrific conversion from the touchline.
And Oldham increased their advantage when Luke Flynn broke through to score near the posts.
OLDHAM ‘A’ went down 31-3 at top-of-the-table Heaton Moor — but the match was closer than the scoreline suggests.
The local side played their part in an entertaining encounter and Moor, who had not lost a game this season, were at times rattled.
Oldham were 14-0 down after after 15 minutes and appeared to be looking down the barrel of a heavy defeat.
But they dug in and played some excellent rugby to cut the deficit through a Danny Simpson penalty.
Moor scored their third try early in the second period, but did not seal victory until they scored two further touchdowns in quick succession in the last 10 minutes.
THE Colts put up a tremendous fight before succumbing 5-3 to Liverpool St Helens in the Lancashire Cup.
Oldham went ahead midway through the opening half through a Mark Goodman penalty.
Saints scored what turned out to be the match-winning try shortly before half-time.
The second half was nip and tuck, and Oldham lived to regret taking a tap penalty when they should have gone for goal as a successful kick would have handed them victory.
