Chadds endure spot-kick pain

Date published: 19 February 2009

CHADDERTONIANS suffered Lancashire FA Cup semi-final heartache when they lost to Preston Wanderers in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out.

Goalless at the end of extra time, Craig Stone’s side were beaten 9-8 in the spot-kick decider at Rossendale United’s ground in midweek.

Secretary Keith Hanley said: “It was a good, hard-fought game played by two good amateur teams.

“We had a couple of decent chances — Steve Barrow was denied by their ’keeper and we had a shot hacked off the line — but Preston were stronger in the tackle.

“As one could imagine, the players were deeply disappointed at the end, but we can take plenty of positives from the cup run.”

Antony Corlett missed Chadds’ first penalty, but Gary Jones saved Preston’s fourth to set up sudden-death. However, when substitute Mark Ashworth failed in his attempt, it was all over for the Lancashire Amateur League outfit.

Hanley added: “We reached the quarter-finals last season and the semi-finals this season, so hopefully we’ll go one better again next year.”

Chadds still have high hopes of breaking into the top three in the premier division.

They picked up a point in a 3-3 draw against third-placed Old Blackburnians on Saturday. Ryan Baldwin equalised with 10 minutes to go after earlier goals from Barrow and Corlett.

Failsworth Dynamos, who are now fourth, enjoyed a great result as they overcame pacesetters Old Boltonians 3-1.

In division one Chadds reserves were edged out 3-2 by Castle Hill, but Oldham Hulmeians remain eighth in division two after playing out a goalless draw at Astley Bridge.
Chadds ‘A’ beat their Old Boltonians counterparts 2-0 in division four — Chris Harris and Mark Kearns got the goals — while Hulmeians ‘A’ moved up to sixth in division seven as Elliot McGinally’s goal gave them a 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Bury GSOB ‘B’ at Tate Street.

In the same division, Hulmeians ‘B’ stay second bottom after losing 4-1 at Castle Hill ‘A’ — Jonathan Hardisty scored the visitors’ consolation — and

Chadds ‘B’ drew 2-2 at Rossendale Amateurs ‘C’. Mark Flint and Ryan Ferns were the marksmen.

Berry bags four as Athletic cut down rivals

Match of the Day by JOHN GILDER

Steven Caine FC 3, Limeside Athletic 8

WARREN BERRY was the hero for Limeside Athletic as his side stormed to the top of division two in the D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League.

Hot-shot Berry found the target four times against Steven Caine FC, who had boasted the best defensive record in the league up until Sunday’s rout.

Jason Barker, the Limeside manager, said: “That was the best we’ve played all season and credit to Warren as he took his goals well.

“We’re top of the table and have a game in hand on our rivals. We are in a strong position and are confident of going up.”

In this top versus second battle on the 3G, it was Steven Caine who broke the deadlock through Jamie Moss.

But it was a different story at the half-time whistle as Limeside charged into a 4-1 lead.

Steven Caine, the leaders before kick-off, rallied at times, but the honours belonged to Limeside, who netted twice in the closing stages to seal an emphatic win.

George Douse, assistant manager of Steven Caine, said: “It was a shock to ship eight goals in one game given our previous defensive record.

“Too many of our players had an off day and you simply can’t get away with that against a team who are also challenging for promotion.”

GOALS — Steven Caine FC: Moss (12), Hursthouse (53), Pauley (78). Limeside Athletic: Berry (22, 41, 48, 90), Ware (39, 45), Buckley (76), McKenzie (pen 86).

STEVEN CAINE FC: Wheeldon, Moss, Pauley, Stott, Gurr, Pine, Hardman, C Palmer, Buckley, Busby, Hursthouse. Subs: Corbett, S Palmer, Caffrey.

LIMESIDE ATHLETIC: Davidson, Barker, Renshaw, Bond, Howard, Ware, McKenzie, Tyrell, Prince, Buckley, Berry. Subs: Street, Davies, Cooney, Glenn, Shaw.

Referee: E Aspin.

Chaddy’s unbeaten run comes to an end

Lowerhouse United wrecked title rivals Chaddy End FC’s unbeaten record in the D&J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott premier division.

The thrilling 4-3 victory, thanks to doubles from Nathan Eastmond and James Curley, hoisted United up to second place.

All is not lost for fourth-placed Chaddy as they boast games in hand over the teams above them.

Royton FC strengthened their grip on top spot with an emphatic 8-3 win at Avro under-19s.

FC Broadgate boosted their promotion hopes in David Giblin division one at the expense of struggling Springhead Libs.

They climbed two places to fourth after a 3-1 triumph.

Limeside Athletic have stretched clear at the top of division two.

Maintaining their 100-per-cent league record, they swept aside fellow championship contenders Steven Caine FC 8-3. See John Gilder’s Match of the Day.

Marvin Greenwood FC who are also unbeaten in the league, were held to a 1-1 draw by Rifle Range Royal Blues on Clayton playing fields.

An eagerly-awaited clash — Marvin Greenwood managed Rifle Range for three years until the end of last season — ended all square after Paul Marshall’s goal was cancelled out by Carl Healey’s late effort for Range.

Meanwhile, there were no surprises in round three of the President’s Trophy.

Top-flight Oddies FC were made to work hard for their 3-2 win over Rose of Lancaster, who are eyeing promotion from division one.

Royton Athletic posted a 4-1 success at Red Star in an all-division one encounter, while premier outfit Failsworth Dynamos defeated Crompton and Royton (division one) 5-2.

Avro on a high after derby-day success

AVRO are going great guns in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division.

After battling at the bottom in the early stages of the season, they are now sit seventh in the table.

Avro made it six wins from their last seven league games with a 3-2 defeat of local rivals Royton Town.

Ahead just after the half-hour mark, they were pegged back by a second-half equaliser from Michael Moss.

But Avro, with confidence running through their veins, retook the lead before adding a third with a near-post header.

Town, for whom Glyn Billington impressed on debut, were handed a lifeline when Ian Hulme converted Carl Caffrey’s cross with four minutes to go, but Avro held out to continue their climb up the table.

Springhead suffered another blow to their title aspirations as they went down 3-2 at East Manchester.

The Ashfield Crescent outfit dominated the first half — they went ahead through Dale Jackman and had three penalty appeals turned down — but were completely inept in the second.

Springhead trailed 2-1 within five minutes of the restart, but hauled themselves back on level terms thanks to second Jackman goal.

But, as they pushed for a late winner, they were hit on the break with three minutes to go.

Hollinwood, in third, are the highest-placed local team, and they stayed on the heels of the top two with a 1-0 win at lowly Hindsford.

Early joy turns to despair as Santos slump

A GOAL midway through the first half was in vain as Santos FC lost 3-1 to AFC Oldham 2005 in division two of the Lancashire and Cheshire League.

John Mayall put the home side ahead from a free-kick moments after team-mate Russell Clarke had left the field suffering from a dislocated shoulder.

But that was as good as it got for Santos, who were punished for a defensive lapse before the break.

AFC Oldham added two more in the second half and they should have had a fourth, but they failed to convert a penalty.

Oldham Victoria are enjoying a good season and they are up to eighth after a 2-1 defeat of Moorside Rangers.

In division ‘C’, Santos reserves’ seven-match unbeaten came to an abrupt end when they were beaten 6-2 by their AFC Oldham counterparts. Hamilton and Rathmill scored the consolation goals.

And Oldham Victoria’s second string lost 5-1 at Milton FC reserves.

Results are —

Anglers off the mark — at last!

THERE was relief in the Anglers camp after they landed their first win of the Ashton Sunday League season — and it was a good one, too.

The division one strugglers overcame top-flight outfit Moston Labour Club 3-0 in the Vic Marsden Trophy. J Eastman (two) and J Buckley got the goals.

It was the only game to go ahead following a batch of pitch cancellations.

Meanwhile, the draws have been made for the divisional cup competitions.

They are —

Premier division cup: Springbank v Halfway House. Byes: Moston Labour Club, Bridge, Warwick United.

Division one cup: Manor v Wellington; Anglers v Charlestown; Falconers v Home Guard. Bye: Dog and Partridge.

Dates to be confirmed.

Simon sets ball rolling

TWO second-half goals clinched a 2-0 win for AFC Royton at high-flying Woodbank in the Rochdale On-line Alliance.

The visitors hit the woodwork, had a goal disallowed and also missed a penalty before going ahead through Simon Atkinson’s fine individual effort.

Andy Morris doubled Royton’s lead moments later with a superb long-range strike.

Ferris hat-trick in vain

A HAT-TRICK from Steve Ferris was to no avail as Oldham ‘A’ lost 4-3 to Everton in the premiership section of the Greater Manchester Ability County League.

Ferris was also on target against Manchester City, and his team made no mistake this time as they recorded a terrific 5-1 win. Adam Flynn (two), Damian Hirons and Ben Kielty got the other goals.

In the league, Liam Aspin’s treble helped Oldham ‘B’ to an exciting 5-5 draw against Wigan.

Steve Mortin and Johnny Haslam completed the tally.

Aspin followed up with another goal — Andy Smith and Jed Graham also netted — in a 3-1 victory over Ashton-on-Mersey.

Tameside Sunday Youth League

OLIVER HUNT’S hat-trick helped Boundary Park Juniors under-12s ‘A’ to a 5-2 win over Failsworth Town in the Tameside Sunday Youth League.

Matthew Queenan and Bradley Dallaway got the other goals.

The under-15s, meanwhile, fought out a thrilling 5-5 draw against Moston Juniors.

Scorers for Boundary Park were Andrew Winterbottom (two), David Pelham, Ryan Mawdsley and Alex Riley.
