Lee out to break his duck

LEE GREENWOOD has his sights set on finally opening his Roughyeds account against Sheffield this weekend.
The unlucky former Halifax and Leigh winger had a ‘try’ disallowed at Widnes for a forward pass, knocked on later in the same game with the line at his mercy and had the ball knocked from his grasp in the act of touching down against Rochdale.
Needing only two more tries for a career century, the 28-year-old, who coaches amateur side Siddal against Oldham St Anne’s in the BARLA National Cup tomorrow, believes that the real Lee Greenwood is slowly but surely starting to reveal himself.
“I’m enjoying it at the moment, apart from the way I keep dropping it over the line,” he admitted. “I should definitely have scored at least two by now so the challenge is to get them against Sheffield.
“The team is going well but individually there is a lot more to come. Last year at Halifax I hardly played at all and my face didn’t fit for whatever reason.
“I signed quite late for Oldham which meant I missed part of the pre-season, but I am making improvements and that will continue as I get more game time.”
With Oldham needing to win at Boundary Park to all-but guarantee a place in the Northern Rail Cup quarter-finals, Tony Benson has Richard Mervill (work commitments), Robert Roberts (back) and Gary Sykes (knee) fit and ready for selection, with Luke Sutton and Luke Menzies also in contention.
Craig Robinson is still nursing the sore elbow he picked up in the midweek Rochdale win and Thomas Coyle (knee) and Stevie Gibbons (shoulder) are still out.
“The expectations are such that every new game is more important than the last one,” Benson said. “We have to focus on each game as, if we don’t qualify, the wins we have picked up so far count for nothing.”

ROBERT Roberts has been named as Northern Rail Cup player of the week following his outstanding performance in the 22-20 win at Widnes.
The Roughyeds captain, who picks up his award at Sunday’s game, said: “It’s great to receive awards like this, but the secret of our success was teamwork. Every man played his part.”
