ROYTON boxer John Newell, the reigning junior novice ABA champion, punched his way to victory in his latest bout.
The 15-year-old pupil from North Chadderton School gained a unanimous points decision against three-times national champion Wayne Ingham in a dinner show at Gloucester.
And it was the perfect start to 2009 for John, who was fighting in the 71 kilo weight division, as he will soon start the defence of his ABA title.
John, a former finalist in the national schoolboy championship, started boxing at Oldham Boys Club at the age of 12 and is currently at Ancoats Amateur Boxing Club which is known as Shannon’s Gym.
He is trained by Sean Rafferty who helped Michael Brodie on the road to the top in the sport.
John has also landed a sponsorship deal with Personal Tyres and Exhausts, Oldham, which will help ease the financial burden of travel costs and equipment.
