OLDHAM TOWN revived their promotion hopes in the first division of the Vodkat North West Counties League following a 2-1 victory at high-flying Wigan Robin Park.
And it was a case of sweet revenge for Town whose 22-month unbeaten home league record had been ended by Park two weeks earlier.
Still stinging from that defeat, Town had several first-half chances - most notably Darren Scanlan - but fell behind on the stroke of half time when Ryan Small’s shot spun out of the hands of keeper Danny Pearson and trickled over the line.
Town’s perseverance was eventually rewarded after 75 minutes when Stuart McGill headed home a James Curley cross.
And their winner came with five minutes left when Curley was brought down and man-of-the-match Jake Cottrell scored from the spot.
CHADDERTON were punished for two glaring defensive mistakes as they lost 2-1 at Eccleshall.
The Broadway side fell behind in the opening minute to a Ryan Misiszkeil goal after failing three times to clear the danger.
They rallied and equalised just after the half-hour mark when Chris Pauley’s through ball split the defence and Paul Ashton ran through to fire into the top corner from outside the box.
However, Chadderton fell behind again on the hour as they lost their concentration after conceding a free kick, allowing the unmarked Adam Soame to head home the winner.
Manager Paul Buckley was pleased with the response as his side bombarded the home goal in the final half-hour, but just couldn’t conjure an equalising goal.
MOSSLEY failed in their bid for a third successive victory in UniBond League division one north after they were held to a 1-1 home draw against Harrogate Railway.
A disappointing game sprang to life when Mossley took a 31st minute lead. Mike Fish broke down the left and pulled the ball back for Lee Blackshaw to fire home his seventh goal of the season.
It took until early in the second half for Railway to create their first chance of the game which Ben Jones shot wide when it looked as though he could not miss.
But Jones made up for that error by scoring Railway’s 74th minute equaliser, converting a cross from full-back Ryan Haigh as Mossley stood motionless appealing for offside.
