THE Chadderton Mill AC match fished on the club water saw a new match record with Paul Hill tipping an incredible 67lb 8oz on to the scales.
Fishing waggler and maggot, shallow and spraying, Paul caught 15 carp to 5lb and loads of silver fish to beat Ian Cox (Stalybridge angling) into second with 47lb.
Drawn on peg 15, Ian caught carp and skimmers on the same method as the winner.
Chris Shaw (Stalybridge angling fished the pole and maggot for 21lb 10oz of bream and carp, the biggest 5lb. Fourth was John Lees (Gilders) with 15lb 8oz of carp taken on the maggot feeder.
IN Chadderton Mill AC’s open match, Alan Shaw (Tight Lines Shaw) took first place with his 19lb 8oz net including plenty of skimmers and ide that fell for the waggler and maggot fished up in the water.
Organiser Lee Humphries (GTI Matchman) and John Lees (Gilders) tied for second with 10lb 10oz.
Lee put seven big skimmers and some ide into his keepnet while John included a 4lb carp and some ide - both taking their fish on maggot feeder.
WELL I’m just about to set off for an afternoon’s fishing on the River Ribble with a borrowed float rod and reel kindly lent to me by Lee Humphries.
Whether I catch anything is another thing, though, as the river is - as with most natural waters - prone to mood swings.
I used to fish the river on a weekly basis years ago, but match fishing took over and all but ended the trips.
In those days the river was home to vast shoals of dace and some really big chub, with the odd barbel making an appearance. But those shoals have been decimated over the years by cormorants and pollution. Barbel are now one of the dominant species on the river, with feeder tactics and halibut pellets the best method for them.
I will be trying the float and bronze maggot and targeting roach and chub. I’ll let you know how I get on.
