A DISAPPOINTING 38-16 home defeat to Millom leaves Oldham St Anne’s in relegation trouble in National Conference League division one.

It was two more valuable league points dropped at Higginshaw Road against strong visitors who ran up a 10-point lead before Saints had even touched the ball.

Three interception tries made the score even more convincing and despite good performances from David Cookson, Richard Badby and Danny Kay, St Anne’s were lacking for most of the afternoon.

John Fox responded to the early setback to barge over after 13 minutes to make the score 10-6 and an exciting contest looked in prospect.

Instead, the Cumbrian side showed more desire to win and continued to brush past some slack St Anne’s defending.

Dane English and Badby were the other try scorers for the home side, with Paul Ashton adding two conversions, but a big improvement is needed if they are to avoid the drop.

WATERHEAD emerged from a gruelling battle at Hull Isberg with a 36–26 victory in division two.

After arriving at the ground late, the visitors nonetheless began superbly and roared into a 16-0 lead through tries from Paddy Slicker, Michael Diveny and Slicker once again, Terry Fitzgerald converting twice.

Isberg then got back into the game with a try which was followed by another on the stroke of half-time, leaving Waterhead 16-10 up.

With a quarter of an hour left, the Hull side – bottom of the table with only one league win all season – had established a 26-20 lead, with Fitzgerald having added a second try of his afternoon. With 15 minutes left, Waterhead were struggling to get hold of the ball. But after defending three consecutive sets on their own line, they managed to spring forward and a try from Ashley Wildman was soon followed by another from the winger, with Michael Bennett getting in on the action too and Fitzgerald kicking twice more as the visitors claimed the points.
